Welcome to Whanau Eats, a groundbreaking project that emerged from the desire to address food accessibility and reduce food waste in our communities. Our journey began with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Through a unique approach to product design, we have created a solution that empowers and uplifts communities.
Whanau Eats initially started as a case study focused on the operations of KiwiHarvest, a prominent food rescue organization in New Zealand. Through this case study, we gained valuable insights into the complexities of food waste management and the vital role of food banks in distributing surplus food to those in need.
As we delved deeper into the subject matter, we realized that while the existing system was commendable, there were still limitations in reach, accessibility, and user experience. It became clear that there was an opportunity to develop a new solution to bridge the gap between surplus food donors and individuals facing food insecurity.
Driven by the desire to make a tangible impact, we embarked on a product design journey to create an innovative platform that would connect surplus food with those who needed it most.
Our team of dedicated designers, engineers, and community advocates worked tirelessly to build an online platform to revolutionize how communities access nutritious food. We focused on creating a user-friendly interface that empowered individuals and families to choose food items based on their preferences and dietary needs.
Figma played a pivotal role in the design process of Whanau Eats. As a cloud-based design tool, it allowed our team to collaborate seamlessly and iterate efficiently. We created wireframes, prototypes, and interactive designs with Figma's intuitive interface, enabling rapid iteration and experimentation. The platform's extensive design component library facilitated the creation of user-friendly and visually appealing interfaces. Additionally, Figma's collaboration features enabled us to gather feedback from stakeholders and incorporate their insights, ensuring the final product met the community's needs. Figma's powerful capabilities empowered us to transform our ideas into a functional and compelling platform for Whanau Eats.
Being part of the Whanau Eats team was an incredible journey of learning and growth. I collaborated with my peers, conducted user research, and contributed to the design and development of the website. This school assignment provided us with a practical experience in product design and ignited a passion for using design to address social issues.
While our initial idea of partnering with KiwiHarvest didn't work out, it led us to rethink our approach and create a platform connecting food banks with needy individuals. We utilized tools like Figma to prototype and refine our design, ensuring a user-friendly interface.
Moving forward, there is great potential for Whanau Eats to expand and make a tangible difference. By refining the platform based on user feedback and collaborating with local food banks and community organizations, we can reach a wider audience and establish meaningful partnerships.
This assignment has shown me the power of design thinking in creating innovative solutions that positively impact lives. It has equipped me with valuable skills and a passion for using design as a tool for positive change. I am excited to see the future of Whanau Eats and how it can make a lasting impact on those in need.
